I've long believed that all lasers and flashlights should have the polarity marked somewhere inside the battery compartment. So many mistakes could have been prevented.

How about a green laser without a DPSS, but instead a diode. Say a green Sanwu pocket laser, would the battery still go with the positive side pointing towards the user? Also it the 304 green laser from Sanwu/This post is still working even though I had it in the wrong way and tried firing it.

The battery orientation in any hand held laser depends upon the design/how the manufacturer wants to make it.
Any laser can be created to need the batteries either way. + to tailcap or + to front. There is no general industry enforced standard.
You need to follow what the manufacturer's instructions are as to which way the batteries go in any given laser or ask if no insructions are supplied.

The Sanwu 304's have reverse polarity protection built into the driver circuit, as mentioned prior in this thread, so damage does not occur if you put the battteries in the wrong way and turn it on--it simply doesn't lwork.
