I found an interesting article on NewScientist.com There is a new form of laser technology in development based on "exciton polaritons" which are particle packets of energy that are neither light nor matter. Excitons are created by adding a charge to electrons which then leave their orbits creating an electron-hole pairing which releases photons in the process. The new engineering allows the state change process to occur in a few trillionths of a second where it becomes impossible to determine whether or not the exciton is light or matter. This particle is called a polariton and its quantum state is indeterminable. The polaritons are also able to share the same quantum states, unlike electrons and require less energy to begin the state changes.
