ok im thinking on making a red burner from a dvd rw diode, but i have a greeny which i broke and was thinking would i be able to use the circut board from that but just replace the diodoe with the dvd rw one, heres some pics p.s i broke off the pot, would i be able to replace it tho ??? also iv got one these off Deal extereme .dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.5914 just in case im going to need to focus the thing im expecting im going too

run some power through it and test the output. 3-5v 125-???ma depends what you intend to do with it

its just a pot. solder on a new one

unless you want a giant blob something will be needed for focus. even a lense from a $5 pointer will work

Hm, if that was from a 5mw pointer it might be fine to drive it since the diode it used to drive would be around 200mw, test it out, (NOT with the red ld) use 4 silicon diodes in series put another 1 ohm resistor in series then power it up and set your multi-meter on the mode to measure voltage and measure accross the 1ohm sense resitor. But first im pretty sure you would need to put another pot on there, shouldnt be to hard.

If you read about 160-250ma on the multi-meter it should be fine for driving the diode. Then you would just have to put it in that housing from dx and your off to go.

before you throw any effort at it, make sure the ir diode in that module has the same pinout as your dvdr laser. including the photodiode, as this driver will use optical feedback.
actually that makes most dvd lasers unsuitable because they don't have photodiodes

The driver from the greeny only put out 1.7v, the voltage is too low to power the DVD burner diode.
