Need help with sony diode and flexdrive

Hey everyone, Im new to the forum and was hoping someone could give me some input on my dvd laser build.

I have a sony 16x diode from Stonetek,
flexdrive from drlava,
aixiz module,
husky 3 AAA led flashlight housing.

after building a dummyload using (4) diodes and a 1 ohm resistor and adjusting the current to 250ma. I connected the diode pos to pos on driver, and (what I understood to be) negative on the diode to negative on the driver. I left the case pin OUT in the open.

After powering it up, it immediately went from somewhat bright to a steady dim. I then swapped the "negative" pin from the diode out and hooked up the case pin to the neg on the flex drive only to continue producing a dim light.

I have read on other threads about over current burning out diodes, but i was wondering if my situation was different considering the way i wired the driver to the diode.

any information/advice you guys could provide me would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Hello Stuntman! And welcome to the forum!

To answer your question quickly, it sounds like you have "popped" your diode. This kind of thing will happen often to a new hobbiest, and can be avoided with careful work to prevent ESD, and shorting out the driver's pins before diode hookup.

If you have any other concerns about this, I would encourage you to read the basic faqs page where you can learn a lot more if you have not already done so. If you still have questions, we have a very powerful search feature built into the forum to help you find answers to the topic you are searching.

If you can't seem to pull anything up, you can always PM me, or another experienced member of the forum about it.

Again, welcome to the forum! I hope you enjoy learning and reading!

Thanks Tyler, I appreciate the reply. Though I'm pretty experienced with electronics, I think I may have jumped ahead a bit by setting the current on my driver to 250ma when I should have tried much less. Someone told me the sony 16x diodes could handle 250ma comfortably, but its possible that was incorrect information.

Again, Thank you for your advice and I will continue to read up on this forum.

-Mike
