Hey guys, I have just completed my first successful build. While waiting for diodes to arrive in the mail, I got impatient and figured it would be a good idea to practice extracting diodes from sleds, and practice soldering while I wait for them to come. I had some spare dvd drives, and a couple of 8x burners. The diode in this build is from a NEC ND-1100a 8x DVD Recorder.
This Lego Lab Laser is what I made as a result . Inside the Legos is a LM317 based driver, with a 10 ohm resistor, a 22 uF capacitor and a N4001 diode. It is all hooked up to a 9V battery. Prior to the build I had it hooked up to a potentiometer based driver that maxed out at 125mA, the laser was very stable at this current, so I didn't opt to increase the current when I built the new driver.
I made a video and there are some more pics, but I figured it would be more appropriate to post them in the multimedia section.
