I posted this to Photonlexicon but some of you might like it too:

I wanted to try a BluRay in my homebuilt projector so I ordered some XBOX 360 optical sleads for 25 USD, they are the "803T" variety.
I extracted the diodes but lacked a good enclosure, the popular "aixiz"-housing isn't good enough if I want to swap diodes and is not easy to mount in a way to get maximum cooling.

I machined a small heatsink from parts that I had lying around and tapped it for an "Aixiz" uncoated acrylic 9x0,5mm lens since that seems to be reasonably efficient at 405nm.

I use a Die4drive and get about 95mW after lens at 120mA measured on a Coherent thermopile head.

Here are som pictures:
(it's an Aixiz 3 element glass lens in these pictures that I used it to test the threading (I changed it for an acrylic for the actual use and measurements) and a scrap red diode to check for good fit)

Infinite, its going in to a laserprojector.
I had it on for an hour and it didn't get hot at all.
I will propably put it to a stress test tomorrow if I manage to get it into my projector. Then It will be on for 4-6 hours with TTL modulation.

Here it is mounted on the Ghetto Projector Mark I:

I's combined with green 532nm to make a strange turqouise whitish color!

wow that's awesome! :D How did you combine it? post more photos!! :D

A polarizing beam splitter?[/quote]

pbs cubes are made to combine two beams of the SAME wavelength or split them into two.

you use a dichroic mirror to join two beams of different wavelengths

Yea duh, but I was talking about his particular setup not how you combine them in general, or the concept of combining. ::)

Glad you like it!

I used a dichroic from laserwave, pass red+green, reflect blue. It is really for 473nm but seems to works ok for 405 too.
I'll make som measurements to see the transmission/reflection efficiency when I have the time.

Here is what it looks like when in use. I ran it for 6 hours straight at a club and it didn't die!
