Laser Pointer Forums - Discuss Laser Pointers | High Power Lasers

I’m from Australia and as you may know the import of lasers is being banned so I’ve decided to make one.
I’m new to all this but do have some skill with electronics.
I don’t want to import anything if possible because it may be confiscated.
I want the laser I make to be as powerful as possible, I want to be able to burn things with it.
I want the laser to be portable I have a flashlight casing that I want to install it in.
I’m planing on using the laser diode form an 16x DVD burner.
With all this in mind I have a few questions:
1. Do I need an Aixis module?
2. If a LDD won’t fit into my flashlight case would simply soldering a resistor to the laser diode work or is this not advisable.
