I dissected 2 disc drives for the fun, and for drive motors, Both these motors drove the optical block along the rails, so I glued a glass mirror to each, hooked them up to 6v (they rated 12) and shone an aixiz 5mw at it. I managed to align it nicely and it's even focusable. Pix:

The whole setup: (BTW one motor's still on a frame cos my screwdriver isn't small enough to undo its screws.)
