Well dont know if this was done before but i managed to lite my cigarette with my DIY burner laser.
Only took a few seconds as well

Did you use a GB diode? I have never been able to light a cigarette due to the white paper on them. :-?

why are you trying to light the white paper when the tobacco is darker? i bet most cigars would work quite nicely.

You have to light the tobacco inside the paper via the end, but it's actually really hard to do that and draw on it simultaneously.

I used a LG 18x diode

And its easy to light a cig just make sure to have goggles on :D

I don't know which is worse, the tobacco for you or the chance of shining the laser in your eye. :D At least you can save your self from the laser beam. ;)

I've done it a couple of times using the GB diode... there is a movie in the multimedia board somewhere too.

The 'trick' is to aim for the tobacco, sort of between the strands near the edge of the cigarette. This provides some isolation from airflow, and a little area quickly heats up to the point where its glowing red hot.

If you aim well, you can just pick it out of the beam and take a few careful draws to light it propery without putting your eyes in harms way at all.

It actually takes more to light a cigar; say a few watts. Mostly this is because of the much larger surface area and density of the material. Sure, you can light an area 1mm in diameter, but the cigar certainly won't burn evenly or for very long.
