I was wondering how much power would you need to light cigs easily with an IR laser.

I know from the lasers I used to own

a 200mW red can light a cig easily

100mW+ greenie can light one in a few seconds

100mW+ blu-ray can light one too

so ?mW IR can light one in a few seconds? (also needs to be handheld achievable power) and what it would cost to aquire one (by making or otherwise)

I'm thinking 200mW+ would be needed but I think 500mW would be overkill?

lol that was the laser I was looking at, was wondering if that could, in fact, light up a cig. just something cool for parties or whatever. I have a big list of wants but a short supply of cash to fill those wants >_<

I was planning to buy one to.:P
But buy yourself safety glasses. You don't laugh if you accidentally hit your eye.

 costs more than the laser....maybe I'll order it after i get the laser...few weeks after... >_<

comes out about the same price as 0-like after shipping costs are applied...$18 shipping :undecided:

Before you have the money you can light your ciga's on the safe way:p

I usually have the laser pointed at the cig away from my face (held in hand and not puffing on it), or from the side and slightly down... how else would you light it? up and possible into your eyes?

take an project box and drill a hole in it put laser inside and put cig from hole
thats safe way i think :)

My 104mw Bluray can only quickly smoke the tobacco, but not light it..

weird, I had an 85mW blu-ray that could light em up. just have to defocus a little and not make it a needle tip sized burning area

My 2W 808nm handheld (1 x 18650) will easily light a cigarette or cigar. The more power you have, the quicker it will light. At the 2W level, the user and any bystanders need goggles, so this is definitely not for parties.
