Hi,
I just got my galileo 5, and as i was told at laserglow, the IR pump diode is 500mW, and the green output is of course <5mW.
I've opened it and it has a little screw with a stopper, and on the other side it has that C3 component.
Obviously, my question is how do i modify my Galileo 5 to become a burning monster,
and how much maximum power could i safely (so it doesn't get destroyed after a few usages) gain from it after the modification (in mW)?

You dont want to modify it to become a 'burning monster' the only thing that will be burning is the diode. If you want a 'burning monster' get one of these

In the other hand you can modify it if you want, but it will only last a few hours at best.

First off, you must do a TON of reading to prepare yourself for this - also.....do you have safety goggles ? If not, you need them if you wish to continue reading this, or any other forum ! Post some pictures of what you have, what you are talking about, and state your level of knowledge regarding both lasers, and electronic work that you have - and also go into exactly WHAT it is you are trying to accomplish - then lots more folks may be able to chip in and give out some info !

I CAN, and will tell you this, though - if it were meant to be a "burning monster" it already WOULD be - most of the pens that get modified die off fairly fast - spend the cash on good equipment, and you'll almost always get more than you paid for ;)

From what I have heard you can easily modify them to 10-15mw without significantly lowering their lifespan. Any more and you risk frying the diode. Also it's hard finding the safe zone without a power meter.

500mW of IR to <5mW of green? 1% efficiency sounds a little low, but I don't have that much experience with greens yet.

You are thinking about only the efficiency of the crystal, perhaps ? The diode is throttled back, so to speak - as well as using lower "quality" crystals - so the efficiency in that range would be just about right :( NOT hammering LG's crystals - just that it was engineered that way, not a crap purchase or anything...Just wanted to be 100% clear :)

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I was thinking crystal efficiency. I guess it's cheaper to use a more powerful diode than to use higher efficiency crystals.

You just hit the hammer on the head ! :D I bought some "high efficiency" crystals off of a reputable seller on Ebay - the damned things cost me an arm and a leg...now I type slow, and can hardly walk ! ;D But seriously, I got a bargain, and still paid WAY too much...they are gathering dust was we speak...waiting for the perfect C-Mount diode to fall into my lap to play with :P

The only way to really make that a "burning monster" would be to remove the crystals, and just have 500mW of IR. But you would really need safety glasses for this, since you couldn't see the IR until you either-
A: Got a really bad headache
B: All the lights go out, permanently.
