Laser Shaving?

Hey everyone!

So I was shaving the other day, and thinking about lasers (isn't that what everyone thinks about while shaving?), and I thought about laser hair removal. So, some questions came to mind.

1. What output power do they use for laser hair removal?

I think they use a special low power pulsed Nd:YAG laser or something like that. (IR and absorbed in water to prevent burns) and I do believe it is permanent, as it destroys the hair follicles.

I've done it inadvertently to my arm with my 15W CO2 laser. It was NOT a pleasant experience. Luckily the beam was diverged enough to not give me a bad burn. Totally vaporized the hairs.

Laser light is no more, and no less harmful than 'ordinary' light. If there was a deep UV laser it'd be just as damaging as UV light, and if there was a green laser it'd be just as harmless as, well, green light. The only hazard that might come from laser light that is not present in 'ordinary' light is that lasers can be focused and directed and cause burns easier.

Not sure about 1-4, but I think I can offer something on 5.

If I'm *very* precise I can remove hair from my arm with a 1.4 Watt 445. Its less cutting though and more singing it away. I imagine though if I felt so inclined I could hold out a length of my hair from the top of my head and "cut" it. The smell of burning hair would be pretty bad though.

I don't know what kind of laser they use but I know that the light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle which damages it enough to inhibit further growth.

PS: If a laser was that strong to burn hair, imagine what a 1 second reflection could do to your eye. Would they provide goggles? :undecided:

There are a ton of Chinese lasers claiming to be for hair removal. Almost all of them are 808nm.
