I'm currently new to the laser scene, and with my love to tinker with electronics I cant stay away from modding some lasers. I dont want to jump right in and spend hundreds of dollars on a high powered laser, so I'm starting off cheap with a laser pen I bought from a Radioshak. What I want to know now is how would I go about modding it from a 5mw to somthing more like 30-50mw. I do have some old DVD burners available so I would be able to get the diodes from them. But where do I even begin? Any help from start to finish would be extremely helpfull.

I doubt you could mod the radioshack pen, it looks like the same from dealextreme and the pot on those does nothing, if you could tho it would not be that much power at most 10mw more if your very lucky.

If this is a red laser, you simply can't 'mod' it to anything more than it is. The diode chip simply can't tolerate it. If you read up in Experiments and Mods there's lots of information on how to go about making a nice (~185mW) red burning laser from DVD burner diodes. You will need:
A housing (Aixiz module)
Diode (Either from DVD burner or http://sales.stonetek.org)
Power source / driver -Either DIY a LM317 driver (see exp. and mods) or buy one of mine, link in my signature
and you're set!

As for the aixis module, is there anything else that could be used to focus the beam?

Could I possibly use one that is in the laser pen I currently have?
 
I guess what I'm really asking is would i be able to biuld a laser out of parts that I can buy from TheSource or RadioShack, or would I NEED to buy an aixiz module?
 
The DX modules say ~5mw, say i wanted to go up to 50-100mw, would I use the same one? or would somthing go horribly wrong?
 
how many mw it says is just what diode is in it, when you put the new dvd burner diode in there you will trash the circuit and diode already in there, you just use the metel housing and focusing lens.
