A popular and somewhat impressive trick with a laser is the basic "light a match" trick. While this is easy to do it is still impressive. One of my green lasers was lighting matches to beat the band,. Any match, other than white or blue would light within a second of holding it in the focused beam. I was demonstrating this to a couple of friends tonight. With proper eye protection for everyone I grabbed a pack of matches and proceeded to focus the beam onto a match head. Amazingly it didn't light. It smoked a bit then just sat there... nothing. I wondered if my laser had somehow lost it;s touch ?? Getting looks of sarcasm and doubt with dismay i took a look at the matches I picked and noticed that the pack was quite old. I tried striking one and the head disintegrated with no ignition. I pulled another match, tried striking it, and the same thing. it fell apart with no ignition. Apparently the combo of old matches and humid weather made for a set of matches that we fireproof. I got a fresh new pack of matches and proceeded with the demo. They lit almost the instant the beam was focused.
The moral to this story Grasshopper...... If you're gonna use lighting matches as a wayof demonstrating a laser use a fresh new pack. Or, use a more powerful laser.
