I hope this isn't old news or a repeat post (I did search), but I just learned that the inventor of the laser, Theodore H. Maiman, passed away in May of this year. (found on wikipedia)
I remembered his name from a science fair project/report that I did back in 1990 (yeah, I had the bug even back then, as an 8th grader), and just looked him up to see if my memory was serving me.
So, maybe holler out a "Thanks Ted!" next time you burn a hole in something or blind a martian with a 125mw star-gazing adventure.
