Is there a difference between the light emitted from a standard LED used for lighting and the laser diode in a laser pointer
thanks folks

Yes.

And LEDs (in flashlights for example) tend to be a broad spectrum, whereas lasers are a single wavelength.

Have you ever owned a laser / and a flashlight, LED !!

I've got three of these. Title is "3-in-1 15 LED Flashlight UV Ultra Violet Light & Red Laser Pointer Torch Lamp" if the eBay link goes dead. It's fairly cheap, can find them all over eBay, and all three have lasted more than a 18 months now. Laser is fairly low power but good enough for pets/indoor pointing, LED is a decent flashlight when you suddenly need one, and UV good for finding pet 'accidents' or anything that exhibits fluorescence (e.g. spiders, scorpions, sea critters).

I have a similar one lying around, came across it cleaning not long ago... red laser in the center, original AAA batteries inside. I think I bought it 5 years ago now for $3.99, or something like that. Still running. Granted it hasn't see much use.
