Is this laser diode dead?

The 40A laser diode bar I ordered arrived today, but i was looking at it and it looked like the silicon is chipped, i also tested it with a multimeter and current can flow both ways i thought a laser diode is a laser diode?

I don't have anything to power it up but i wanted to know if it is dead which i highly think it is.

I thought what the heck and tested it by contenting it strait to a battery, it didn't work but after cleaning off the broken silicon it worked.
Because half of the silicon is missing I'm guessing I can only power it up half of the maximum power.
