Is it normal to see color?

For my first laser, I bought a pair of cheapies for 5$ for 532nm. Works perfectly, while bleaching the color right out of the dot.

I'm building a 1W 445nm (probably will set it < 500mw) and I'm iffy about the glasses I just bought.

I have a 4$ purple laser pen I bought on ebay with my ebay bucks, and I can see the complete purple dot.

What has me baffled, the cheap glasses take more color out of the dot than the 35$ ones I just bought (OD 5+/6+)

Is this normal or do I have defective glasses?

It all depends on what wavelength your safety glasses are rated for.

Some (more expensive) pairs will cover a wide range of wavelengths and others will only cover a narrow band.

Be careful though with your 532nm laser though as your goggles may block the 532 light but may not block any of the IR light.

I wouldn't use your cheapies for a >500mW blue laser.

What green laser do you have?

It's all about how much of that light passes through. If the dot is painful to look at without your glasses, but only a dim dot with them on it's blocking a high percent of the light. With higher powered lasers more light passes through the glasses.

I have a 132mw lazerer.

The cheapies look like it blocks more light then the expensive ones :/

Because the cheepies are only blocking a narrow band of light they may block more. You would have to do tests with a LPM (Laser Power Meter) to accurately tell though.

I just don't understand >< are goggles supposed to behave like this?

After doing some research, the goggles I bought off of bogart are crap. T-rex is a bad brand. Off to find quality ones now.
