Can some one explain the charecteristics of an IR laser, i know they burn, but is the beam white or red or invisable or what?

The light isn't that visible, you just see a deep red glow, so you should get proper eyewear before messing around with these. You might be blinding yourself and not even know it until everything goes black. Scary. :o
Here's a chart of wavelengths and how much each one is visible to the human eye:
(note, IR starts at about 750nm)

A really long wavelength like one from a CO[sub]2[/sub] laser would be totally invisible. :P
