IR laser power

Hi, new to these boards.

I'm thinking about making a computer input device using an infrared laser and a camera or Wiimote (I have 2 Wiimotes already and I don't know how much a reasonably good IR camera costs). I was wondering what sort of power I would need for such a device (camera or Wiimote) to pick a laser dot out of a projected image. The Wiimotes normally run from the sensor bar which has an array of 8 IR LEDs in 2 groups of 4, but considering I can turn the sensitivity to 2 (almost lowest) of 5 levels, something half as bright would probably be fine.

I'm looking for a laser completely outside the visible spectrum.

Surfaces would probably be near-white latex painted wall, projector screen, or white bedsheet.

3mW will be sufficient. Many cameras have night-vision or night-shot options that will pick up IR.
