Hi!
I will appreciate any comments on the following problem. I have no experience with lasers or even IR lasers.
I want to use a video projector to play a first person shooter game on a large screen. But instead of using the normal controlers I want to use a life size rifle to aim and shoot. Let's abstract from all other problems and consider the following for aiming. My idea was to attach an IR laser to the rifle and make the laser flash at the moment when the player shoots. At the same time I would have a full HD 60fps camera(best case scenario I can use a Gopro 4, worst but still possible some specific IR sensitive camera - yet to be found) aligned so that it covers all the screen. When the player shoots I would record a series of frames from the camera, use image processing to detect the IR laser point on the screen, calculate the position and feed it to the game as the aim point.
Would it be possible to see the IR laser point on the video stream from the camera? Or would the reflection of the IR beam be too weak. Or maybe IR lasers do not reflect from white screens? Some time ago I did already think about this solution and my conclusion based on what I found on the internet was that the percentage of the reflected light is so small, that one has to use a strong laser which would be quite dangerous. But that was all just info found on internet, so maybe someone could clarify this to me.
Thanks!
Have a nice day.
Andy
