Identifying LD in DVD drive?

Hey guy!

I recently opened a DVD drive (Pioneer DVR-106DB) and found that it had two diodes.

One is open (L8H35RV printed on the side) and one is closed (encased in a heatsink with a small glass window).

I'm having trouble identifying which one is the DVD burner, as I haven't finished my driver yet I can't test them in a safe way.

Also, any guides to determine the poles?

Get a multimeter and use the diode checker option. It will tell you what colour the diode is, and also what the pinout is (try the different combinations until you see the LD lase)

It could also be a IR diode so be carefull, try viewing it through a camera (phone, webcam etc) to see the IR

Would it be okay to test them with two 1,5V AA batteries for a few seconds, just to test them?

No. I did that once and my diode died. Best to get a multimeter.

I meant after I know which pin is ground and +, even then?

Obv, I just told you that in my last post. Get a driver and a multimeter if you want the diode to lase. Its not about the voltage, 1.5v is fine, but it would output way too much current (amps) than the diode needs, and the diode would keep taking in more and more current, dunno if you've heard the statement "diodes are current hungry"
