Identifying harvested diodes...

Do the letters/numbers on the side of some diode cans have anything to do with identification of the diode? If not, just from searching around a bit, it appears that there is really no way to positively ID a harvested diode, correct?

(edit--these diodes have the window on the OUTSIDE of the can, if that makes a difference. They came out of an H&L (Hitachi & LG) GWA-4165B DVD-RW)

Some of the more unusual diodes can be
traced back to their actual part numbers,
but that is correct for the most part.
It's a 16X drive, so don't expect more than
250mW.
