I was digging around in one of my closets and I found my Radio Shack multimeter that I've had for over ten years!
Anyways, I decided to test some of my batteries, and boy, even a fraction of a volt makes a huge difference. For example, I put a 2.5 V battery set into a red laser pointer, and the dot was barely visible, even on a white surface. I switched to a 2.75 V set, and the dot pretty bright.
