i am thinking of getting a 3w laser just wondering how much brighter will it be then a 1w

How much brighter is a 3w 450nm laser then a 1w 450nm ?

Yeah, it will be maybe 75% brighter than the 1 watt. There isn't a 1:1 relationship here.

Steve is wrong. Well, he's right in the sense that there is of course three times the luminosity by definition, but Paul is a lot closer. It is not at all linear. In fact, we perceive almost nothing linearly:

Brightness, luminosity, intensity, power, energy, power density, luminous efficacy, luminous efficiency, luminous flux, all mean something technically different believe it or not. Be careful what word you're using.
