Highest mW pen style laser

I just want to know what the highest mW in green you can buy in the pen style lasers.

Well, green is very different from IR and such. In terms of green, the DX pens get pretty high, but because they are poorly IR filtered, and the 200mW is more of a peak rating than anything, its hard to say. I'd guess with a NewWish 200mW you may get ~100-150mW of green though which is pretty high.

Otherwise, the highest a manufacturer specs a pen greenie to that I know of is 80mW. Sometimes you get special, more efficient ones that get sold as higher models. Here and there novalasers even stocks 125mW ones.

I guess its hard to say because there's a difference between what a reseller may have in stock one day, and what they are originally made as. For instance, I have a pen greenie that easily tops 170mW, but you can't regularly buy these from anywhere as they only occur by luck of the draw.

Ignoring that though, I'd probably guess either a NewWish/DX "200mW" or a novalasers 125mW.

This is actually a very interesting question. Try Melles, Coherent, Spectra-Physics. Give them your requirements (pen-sized, green, etc.) and they'll answer your question. If you mean production lasers, it's luck of the draw. I've heard of 125mW CNI's going as high as 140mW and even higher, but that's pretty rare, assuming it's even true.

EDIT: Pseudo, you have a 170mW pen size? Hard to believe, but I do believe you. IR free?

There are actually no such thing as CNI 125mWs. They make up to 80mW, however you generally expect them to average at least a little higher than that. Sometimes you get some special ones that top 125mW. Once I got extremely lucky and got one that easily topped 170mW. Unfortunately I liked it too much and wore the button out on it, but if you bypass the button its still going strong.

Of course that's all luck of the draw, and my understanding is that lasers like this are only 1 in every few hundred. I will be getting 10 more soon though, so I hope to at least find another >125mW :)

I know the hercules isnt a pen laser but it is handheld and gets up to 400mw.

Actually Laserglow have quite a few Hercules that do well over 400mW's, and that's AVERAGE !! Mine averages 421mW's and peaks at 470mW's( WOW I can talk about the Hercules and Laserglow here without a drama !!!), LASERGLOW, LASERGLOW, HERCULES, HERCULES !!! Sorry had to get that out of my system.

The Herc's have a pot on them, which I have now cranked up after asking LG if it was OK and visually at least it is putting out even MORE power. I can't wait to get my Lasercheck to test it's output now.

BTW Psuedo that's 9 @ >90mW, at least that is what I heard.

DANG, I forgot about that one, whoops. Well at least I should have 10 of something else fun coming assuming customs doesn't come down on me!

The boxes say 90mW, but they're purchased as 80s. Honestly the number on the label means nothing. DL had ones that said 125mW so I asked what was up, the verdict was basically that the OEM could print any number I wanted on there, doesn't mean a thing to them. ::)

Visually eh?... I haven't cranked mine up yet....
I may have to play with mine too... I wonder if yours is really a very powerful one that is only stable at the lower powers?... they make sure your power is perfectly stable before they label the power rating and sell it to you.
If you can honestly see a visible difference after already being that powerful, It would seem you are getting quite a power jump!..... Humm!!!!!!

But about the pen.. its according to your definition of "pen"... the typical diameter of a pen is a little bigger than a pencil.. that being the case.. I love my dragon 125mw.... it does everything my herc can do, except with less distance abilities and intensity. The ones with more power get fatter and heavier and pretty cluncky for an honest pen laser.
My dragon is gold and black and very attractive in my pocket and no-one even gets a clue its a laser as it looks like a nice business pen so I can take it into anywhere without raising suspicions or looking like I have a lead weight in my shirt pocket.

The only draw back, which dosn't matter to me, is that it diverges a little quicker at the higher setting.  I assume it is because of some sort of thermal lensing ??  Anyway I can't wait till I get the Lasercheck to do some serious testing of my own, I have a suspicion that it might be peaking in the Class IV range now !!!!

WOW! :o :o :o :o :o :o
Class IV! That must be amazing at burning things. Do you use goggles? :D

Yeah I do use goggles but probably not as much as I should  :-[

I am really, REALLY hoping that it will peak at >500mW's.  It was already peaking at 470mW's on the lower power setting so it only needs another 30mW gain to do it.  And yeah it burns the absolute crap out of anything of the right colour. ;)

Yes sir it does... but its not exactly a pen laser!...

Out of curiousity.. what is yours rated at for continuous run power?... or what was the rating to paid for?

Hey windstrings, Laserglow really looked after me with this one BIG TIME !!  Dimitry ROCKS !!!!  Awesome Company to deal with BTW.  It is rated at 421mW's average and came with it's own Certificate as proof.

Only thing I can tell you about the fact that it diverges like this is that it is mode-hopping. When it mode hops the divergence absolutely sux! This is very common when overdriving a diode. It would be stable up to a point and then it all of a sudden starts mode hopping. Also, the only way a human can see the laser getting brighter is when the divergence takes a dump. The human eye will see a very bright spot, and after a certain point, you're simply blinding yourself and not seeing it get any brighter even if it is actually getting brighter. But go ahead and increase the divergence on a 5mW leadlight and watch it seem as bright as a 50mW instantly because the spot is so huge and the light is disbursed on a larger surface area.

I could be wrong and do actually hope that your Herc is in fact more powerful that 421mW CW TEM00. But you do know the saying... with more power comes... uhh... a shorter life. :p

GL, and nice to see you on here;
