help with driver build..

otay im ordering a sld laser diode. i have experience with led and electronics but first for building a laser driver.. my output im looking for is max of 5v and 2.3amps.. im not sure on power source yet, as i can step down the power if needed.. but the circuit for the driver im wondering about.. if its easier just to assume a 12v power supply that would be ideal.. im looking to make 2 different applications, work light and car taillights..

If starting from 12V... I might be inclined to do something quick and dirty, like a 5 volt regulator or just resistors. One gets no extra credit for making something efficient. Throw in a capacitor and resistor to deal with transients. Good enough is the enemy of better.

Laser tail lights? Sounds cool and/or a good way to get yourself some trouble, or maybe not if you don't go wild with it.
There is a lot of random good stuff on this site. Seek and ye shall find, or something like that.

Nobody in LPF does anything with or has any experience with SLD's devices and you provide no data sheet about it so...
Common sense--contact SLD and/or whoever you are ordering the SLD device from and ask about power requirements and if a "laser diode driver" is needed for constant current,model , and where to get. Obviously it's creators would know much better than people who have never seen or used SLD devices.

You better check with local Dept of Motor Vehicle and US DOT to find out if whatever it is you want to do with tailights complies with laws/regulations about same if you mean automotive which have strict legal regulations--pretty sure you can't mess with tailights without being in violation---if you are meaning bicyle then maybe OK

Good plan
From Encap's reply, I decided to look up the SLD light. The technology looks good, when it's available. It should be no problem making, or buying a driver for these without great expense.
