help a new enthusiast?

ok so ive been really getting into laser stuff lately. But, i came here and theres all this talk of flex drives and hosts and such. would anyone care to explain what all of these things are and what i do with them and how to assemble them or at least point me somewhere that its already been written. I know its sort of alot of typing and thinking for whoever is going to respond to this. but its greatly appreciated
