Hello all I am very excited to have found this board. In a nut shell I am an avid hobbyist. I build my own speakers and other assorted audio gear, mostly in the studio kind of thing. I am an electrronics guy with a degree in Physics. I LOVE Lasers and played with them all the time in college. That was in the days of HeNe 5 milliwatt's. OK since joing last night here is what you guys have caused me to. (I was up so late my wife thought I was checking out porn)

I have ordered:
a 30 mw green laser from dealextreme (Yes, I read about the vendor and for 20 bucks or so, couldn't pass it up)
1 x Sony Diode Pre-Installed In Aixiz Module (SLD1239JL Installed)  = $26.99
1 x Aixiz Diode Housing Module (Aixiz Diode Module Housing)  = $5.99 (before you say, it was not needed...)
from Geeks.com an HD-DVD player to strip out the 405nm diode.

My wife will probably wish I was just watching porn when this is all said and done!

I have all the test equipment I need and I think I actually have a couple of LM317's around too.

Now, I will need some mirrors, a fog machine, some stands, DC motors, X/Y drives (I haven't checked yet but when I was in college we used a speaker to move a mirror driven by an audio oscillator, one for X one for Y no where near linear but fun none the less) and a couple of weekends...

This board Rocks!
This is bad I think... Real bad.... I am SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!

Oh, hi!

That is some avatar you got there, I like it.
Good luck with your projects and have lots of fun. :D

Welcome to the forums!

Thanks on the Avitar, I am looking forward to getting a few things going light show wise. Now to read up on saftey etc.

When I get the DVD burner I'll do a little DIY dissassembly on it. I never thought good would come from HD-DVD's demise... Surplus blue/violet lasers Sa-Wheat.

Great Forum!

Jules

hello Jules, welcome :)

did you make that avatar yourself?? it looks like marilyn manson

Welcome from another Texan (and a newby as well). I found DealExtreme first, and then this forum, but the habit seems to be progressing about the same. I now have a number of off the shelf lasers from 30 to 200mw and ought to have a phr-803T blu-ray up & running soon. Be sure to read up before wiring up. If you are going the LM317 route with a 405nm diode, you are going to need a bit over 7volts for your power source, I think. Be sure to double check that with some of the folks here that actually know what the heck they are doing. If you want to go with a smaller, lower voltage power source, you can alway purchase a lavadrive from DrLava. That is a buck/boost curretn regulated driver that will provide whatever voltage the diode needs (within a limited range - I think it is 2.5 to 5.5V) at whatever current you have selected via the onboard potentiometer. For a blu-ray hand held laser pointer project, the flexdrive / lavadrive makes a lot of sense. Check it out in the Buy/sell section - oh, heck - here is a link.

Oh, hey, you might want to edit your "custom text" in your profile. It shows up under your avatar and helps communicate the theme of your profile. Have fun!
