Getting started

I'm a physics nerd but have only recently become interested in laser pointers. I was wondering if someone could tell me a good pointer to get me started, it must be:

-Cheap
-"Modable" (So I can mod it and fiddle around with it)
-Available in the UK

DX is good, but it depends what you want it for as well.
From what Ive heard you wana watch out for the higher powered greenies, cause some of that output power is IR.
Where in the UK?
Also, what mods are you going to be doing? Changing diodes, "pot mod" or what?

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.10004 that would be good I guess, you have access to the driver so you can do what you want with that, and the whole module just screws out of the heatsink giving you easy access to the diode and optics, and its pot moddable ( safely ) to 75mW , ive seen them pushed to 104mW though.
