I saw a post on http://boingboing.net today where a startup company who prints 3d objects from CAD files is offering their service FREE to the first 500 customers.

Here's more info on the original post: http://www.boingboing.net/2008/07/23/shapeways-3d-printin.html

And here's the site of the company, along with the coupon code for a free printed object...
http://www.shapeways.com/beta
Beta code: "BoingBoing"

I was going to take advantage of this but I can't think of anything I'd like... I contemplated asking kenom for the source files for his barrels, but I'm not sure the plastic wouldn't do much in the way of heatsinking.

[edit]See reply #3 below - It seems I may have been duped and this is not an offer for free 3d printing.[/edit]

Oh, and by the way, that's only free to the first 500 people... Boingboing is a huge site and I'm sure this will run out quickly, so don't procrastinate on this one, if you have something modeled in a 3d rendering program that you'd like to have in real life, better get a move on.

It seems I may have jumped the gun a little... It doesn't seem you get a free object printed, you only get to get a membership to their site, which I dunno, maybe costs money or is invitation only in the future?

It seems it's a site that allows community-driven 3d modeling and cheap rapid prototyping.. it's apparently $2.50-$3 per cm[sup]3[/sup] (which sounds really cheap, but is prohibitively expensive for most normal sized objects.)
