Hello everyone!

I just picked up a DVD burner and i need help testing and extracting the diode. i cant tell which is which, but im pretty sure i found the diode(s) they are brass colored, about 5mm wide with 3 prongs, only 2 are soldered to anything. what should i use for a resistor to test a diode? what power level is the IR one? is it worth anything? how in the hell can i get them out of thiss pressed metal fitting?! im going nuts because i spent about 40 bucks on this drive and i cant get the diode out!

DOH ! Okay - get a TENDER toch, and a dremel tool....or a pair of nippers to nip away at the heatsink...now, only one of those will be red - the other will be IR...Take two, 1.2v NiMh AAA batts in a holder, and test it that way. The diode is a little tricky - I am almost positive that the common pin will be grounded, and if you hold that one so it is pointing to the 12 o'clock position, facing you, the pin that is to your left and below that one, like the 8 o'clock will be the positive pin. Now....honestly, I cannot recall how I got the diode outta mine...but be CAREFUL when you do any soldering ! Too much heat will kill it....look at my post in this area called, "dvd-laser anyone" or something like that....It'll give you a good weblink to hit....
