Education in electronics

I've became very interested in lasers and electreonics does any one know how to go about going to college or any courses i can do as a beginner.Can someone tell me what this guy means" It mode shifts like crazy, and the divergence is much worse than advertised" Thanks .

No seriously though.
Mode shifting / hopping - where one laser dot becomes two or more adjacent dots. Basically.
Divergence - how much the beam spreads out. Lower divergence is better as the beam stays thinner for longer.

Afraid I can't help you re the courses though cos I'm an aussie, got no idea what you got in the UK.
