Hello i was thinking about getting one of these drones here but wanted to somehow incorporate a live feed system with my camera, i currently have a gopro hero 3 so i would like to work with that, i can live stream with the gopro app but it has very short range..



is there a good way to extend the range with my go pro camera?- this one does have its own camera but im sure i could save $ by using my gopro and just getting the drone

My initial thought was a mobile hotspot and IP camera (GoPro) attached to the drone. Only way you are going to extend its range is a repeater.

The way FPV quadcopters get their video to the user is usually by using a video transmitter in the range between 900 and 5800mhz, generally a 200mw transmitter can get you 1km of distance without obstacles, but a lot of it depends on the antenna aswell. The lower frequencies like 900 and 1200 mhz penetrate very well. The problem with these frequencies is that they are illegal to transmit on because those frequencies belong to gsm towers and the military.

2400 and 5800 mhz on the other hand are perfectly legal to transmit on and achieve the same range on the same power, they also have smaller antennas reducing weight. The main downside is that they can be stopped by a moderately dense tree. Also 2400mhz is used to control the drone so using a 2400mhz video transmitter with 2400mhz for flight control will lead to both messing with each others signals.

So that leaves 5800 as the king because its not illegal and wont screw up for flight control, it is still a very capable frequency, but your aircraft will need to be in line of sight to get a solid video feed.

Please note I've never played around with fpv quadcopters and stuff, just did a heap of research because I wanted to build one but never pulled the trigger.
