Drilling hole in button mod?

My friend recently modded his 5mW and now its a 10-15mW. He said that he drilled a hole in the button for some reason and now its more powerful... anyone know what he did?

He most likely did what is called a "pot mod". Pot is short for potentionometer(spelling ?) and it is basically a "dial" that can adjust the voltage going to the controll board for the laser that can increase, or sometimes fry a laser diode's output power. go to www.plans-kits.com and look at their laser section - it details how to do the pot mod - BUT lots of folks that try this end up killing their lasers permanently...only should be tried on the leadlight brand or similiar low powered models - I have seen similiar mods for the WL Nexus as well, but I do not think it is needed on that one !
 
Wow that looks like a really cool site! but why dont the laser companies do that to the lasers in the first place to make their lasers more powerful???

They do it in the first place to make them less powerful! Same thing with computer processors. You need to slow them down or they will overheat and die. Pot modding a laser is dangerous and will increase the chance it suddenly dies on you, and take away from the laser's life. Do so at your own risk.
 
So are there any other kinds of mods that are more safer to do? and will still have the same or more power?

The buy the new laser mod is normally the best. There are various things you can do, but most everything will either cost money, or have a detrimental effect, so the best is just to buy a new OEM laser or be content with what you have.

@Troyboy, the leadlights are often well made and handle 15mW without too much trouble. Every laser is different though, and I've even had leadlights that couldn't handle their natural 4.5mW, so be careful if you're planning on modding anything.
 
Yeah - the leadlight I bought only checks in at 2.9mw or something like that - but still looks very nice - and the case is kinda classy looking, too !

Yea my friend's laser seems fine. He modded it, popped in some fresh batteries, and boom... it was a whole new laser
 
Wow stage two looks pretty difficult and maybe dangerous to my laser so I'll just stick with the pot mod! :P
 
Dang... you can never get a good mod that doesn't somehow kill your laser can you... :'(
 
can you change the diode in the laser pointer or is that to hard? when a laser "dies" what really goes wrong with the laser to make it stop working?

Actually I am about to do that with an Aixiz module. I don't know it you saw the dvd laser post under experiments & modifications, but changing the diode is defiantly possible. ;D
