I read about this hack some time ago. And it was a very slick hack. An ebay user known as 'heruursciences' was the first to do the mod I believe. He modified a single 1AAA dorcy flashlight to drive a blueray diode. A very trick hack but this guy knew what he was doing. I read his write up sometime ago but I wasn't able to find it again. He had to scope the circuit out to check for spikes and surges but he modified the simple buck circuit in the flashlight to boost the voltage w/out toasting the diode.
I would recommend emailing this guy to find out what he did. He still auctions the blueray pointers on ebay

{EDIT} So yes it is possible to drive a blueray off a single cell (1.5 volt) if you design the driver properly.
