do u have to use 16X dvd burner diode

do u have to use 16X dvd burner diodes to make your laser becaus i am making a science project i am using a mini mag flash light taking out the light ect then replacing it with a diode with a laser housing 12mm X 30mm if i use lower than 16X will my laser be weaker???
