diy red laser diode help

ok. i took apart an old dvd rewritable and i couldn't find the laser diode. all i found that looked anything like it was a rectangle shaped thing with 12 gold legs coming out the back. anyone have any ideas. i also want to mention its a very old burner. is a rewritable the same thing as a burner

That rectangular thing is probably the diode, some DVD burners have diodes shaped like that. You can't turn it into a laser very easily though.

You might be able to focus it for a small amount of burning power up close but there is no chance of making it into any kind of a pointer.
