To each their own. I haven't killed a laser by doing it and there's a stop sign down the street that's been illuminated by pretty much every laser i've ever owned. And i've yet to get any kind of reflection off of it anywhere near the power density to cause COD in a diode.. or even require goggles.

Given the overall factors needed for killing a diode... I don't see a street sign as a problem.

Honestly a140's aren't that expensive.

My concern is with eyes, and while the chance is low, it is not hard at all to catch a millisecond reflection, and of that reflection happens to contain a substantial fraction of 1W... what then?

Experimentation with 5mW greens or red is great, I do it all the time... but going around waving a high power laser is just stupid.

a lot of diffraction grating is very dangerous, as even though it would split a 1w beam into 10mw - 20mw dots, it can easily give you the false sense of safety
