Just for those that have not "seen" an IR Laser in action - here's a (corny commentary) vid with two demos....

Wow thats kinda scary! whered you get that fiberoptic cable? Is the cable what makes the beam invisible?

Boy.. wouldn't you be the "party Poooper".. I'm mean popper!.... and no one would know why all the balloons keep popping!

hahahahaha !

No the beam is invisible, due to the wavelength - 808nm is in the ifra-red range. The fiber optic cable is just the "colliminating optics" for this type of diode. The diode itself is most likey either a C or an A mount diode, encased in the brass housing for heatsinking. I believe this originally came out of a peice of medical equipment - maybe for cataract surgery, or lasik, or something of that nature - completely guessing though !

It is pretty cool - I may tear apart my 5mw "nose hair clipper" greenie to see if I can use the crystals and see what the power range I can make would be !

Yeah - I gotta try to dig out my IR webcam from my computer room/office/mess !  I just moved in not too long ago - and the computer room is still mostly boxed up - it is buried in there somewhere - pretty nice little webby, though - has 32 IR LED's for night time illumination ! Yeha, and the camera on my cell doesn't work -some wort of software error - It is just a pain in the A$$ to take it in to the office to get looked at -they take FOREVER.

Hey SenKat when you take apart the 5mW and take out the crystal could I see a picture of it? Ive always wanted to see on but didn't want to disect my laser

Yea... lets see some guts and innards!... hooooohoooo heeee heeeee... muhhhhhaaaaaaaaa

Make it gory  ;)

Maybe I should just Dremel open a 50mw instead ? I have one that the threads stripped on - and will not close any longer - I could open it up like I did for my daughter's class ! That may be a this weekend project.....
