Current controlling benchtop power supply

Would a benchtop power supply with a current limiting control be a suitable method for powering a laser diode directly, or do you think that possible current and/or voltage spikes make this method too risky?

With an attached capacitor it's considered OK. But it's a little big to be a permanent solution :P
