I have several computer power supplies from 1U rack servers (old PIIIs) and desktops. I know if you short the green wire and the black wire next to the green on the mother board connector,, you can turn it on and off. BUT will a server power supply that is powering 4 SCSI hard drives and the motherboarsd, power a 2 watt module? Have any of you guys used a PC power supply for the 5v or 12v supply for lasers? I want a 12v supply with high regulation. thanks for any replies. Tom.

I have not used one for that purpose, myself. The power supplies available on eBay are usually so inexpensive, I normally go there. If the supply is filtered well and does not exceed the volage requirements for the driver, it should work if it can supply enough current.

Yes I am going to put a meter on it and see what voltage it really puts out. I think it should be steady at 12v being a computer. but i don't know.

Tolerance is supposed to be within 5%. Though it's a great idea to measure and be sure ^

Yes I will test it. It is a real nice compact supply but it ran 4 SCSI drives and the motherboard I don't know how much current each one draws but I think the power supply iss 220 watts or so. It is nice and small but heavy

The specs should be written on the PS label.
Always good to check those specs with a DMM

They're fine. They provide a stable 12V. Any enerprise-class stuff is good quality, although yours sound like they are exceedingly old. Modern 2kW PSUs are not particularly heavy. 220W isn't nearly enough to power any modern rack equipment.

Right. It came out of a singke rack pentium III server but fora 2 watt laser. I am thinking it should be enough. And it's free.
