Someone posted a while back where they managed to foacus their camera on their lasers beam, sort of a marco shot. You could see each individual dust particle that was floating about through the beam.

How was it done? I find it next to impossible to foacus on the beam, I just end up with a blury beam and a bit of light on the floor.
 





Not that exact picture but yes, that kind of thing.

When I try doing it, I find it impossible to focus the camera on the dust.
 
That shot was taken in thick fog, the camera moved which gave the particles the streaks it has. Of course fog is filled with water which makes it a great source for particles. Particles of dust on the other hand are very, very small, it's always going to be hard to get a good fucus on them without a good camera. Things like smoke and dry ice aren't really good either on their own as again, the particles are tiny.

You would probably want to position the camera at an angle so no light is being directly fired (refracted) from the beam into it. Then use a secondary aid, maybe saw dust or water or something (something a little bigger than house particles) to reflect back into the camera, putting more emphasis on the reflection from the particles and less on the beam of light it's self.

Your other choice of course is to buy a better camera...
 
i think thats the trick , you need to have and actual object close to beam. After all, it is sort of hard to focus a camera on a light beam all by itself.
