Hey guys, i just decided to get my Grandma's old computer and make a laser out of it :D.. It uses the DvD writer from the disk drive, I'm sure you have herd of it. I was wondering what type of eye protection i will need for it (it is a 250mW laser) do sunglasses work for that >.<? i will not be looking directly at the laser, just at the beam and sorta the entrance. Can anyone help?

Sunglasses will NOT work. Buy yourself some good goggles, look at dragonlasers.com

So i really do need laser glasses, even if im not looking into the laser?

No one thinks they are going to look into the laser. Even a reflection of a shiny piece of plastic could damage your eyes. Yes you NEED goggles for >5mW

Great, im only 16, didn't know what im getting my self into >.< building drivers and buying Aixix modules.... I'm good with computers but not lasers.... Damn.... thats great.... home-made laser glasses a possiblity ;)?

If you coat the glasses in tinfoil, yes. Otherwise no, unless you can obtain the wavelength blocking materials.

cool, thanks! You guys have been helpful. I herd those cheap $1 laser pointers can blind, what is the mW of that?

Also: what is mW? mili-Wat?

It would be really hard to blind yourself with a 5mW $1 red laser

The problem is with higher power lasers and cheap 5mW green lasers that leak infrared at high powers.

mW = milliwatt

No, if you want to protect from 360 angle, I propose you buy an astronauts helmet.
But really, they do a good angle of protection to your eye, I figured it out before, but I forget what it was. It really depends on your nose and how glasses stand on your face.

Also, in the video he does, from what I know, everything properly. However, I would feel more comfortable looking at a schematic than right off the video.

Yeah, lasers seem like an interesting hobby to get into, seems fun :D. But i do not have a job right now and have to worry about a car and such... Home-made blue-ray laser next anyone ;)?

I've been running on dry for a couple months now, first paycheck tomorrow. I think you'll enjoy your stay here, even if you don't build any lasers, I'm sure you'll learn a lot about electricity and other various sciences.
