Boost Converter as Current Source?

I have a question about laser drivers and how one can use a boost converter to drive a laser diode. How is it possible to fix the current supplied by a boost converter? Isn't a boost converter a constant VOLTAGE supply, not a constant CURRENT supply?... Do all these boost drivers have separate circuitry like this:

to provide a constant current after the voltage is stepped up, or am I thinking about this wrong?

No. Most can be configured as either.

No. That's a linear stage which is unnecessary.
