I did a little poking around and found another replacement for the LM317. The link is:

It's a Linear Tech LTC3080.
The voltage mode dropout is 300mV
The current mode dropout is 1.35V (plus the drop over a 1 ohm resistor). For a 200mA current - that's 1.55V minimum drop from the battery to the LD - not too shabby. See Page 16 of the data sheet.
