Hmm. If it's really 3 Watts, the regulator probably puts out more current than is convenient for running a GB (or even an open-can) diode.
I guess you could add another regulator or enough resistance to drop the current that much but that wastes battery life.
Now if you spot a cheap 1W, 1 CR123, that'd be the one to get.

yeah
i didnt mean to say that you use the original regulator as i dont think it has one, it should just be connected directly to batteries.

you can add a resistor and a pot which would do the trick :cool:
