Hi folks!

I'm new here, and hoping someone can help me.

I'm building a rig to illuminate something on a stage. I can't be too specific about what we're up to or I'll get in trouble, but here's what's needed:

A red and a blue laser rigged a few inches apart and mounted in the lighting rig. They will have lenses to broaden the beams to 1m diameter when they reach the performer 5m away.

We can't afford to hire a laser expert in, but it will get a full H&S check at the venue.

1 - What power would be regarded as 'safe'. The performer will not look into the beam, but she may glance that way. Bear in mind that the beams will be spread to 1m by the time they reach her.
I've no idea how to calculate this since the laser is virtually a point source at exit. Maybe someone here has had relevant experience, or can do an experiment..?

2 - Any recommendations for suitable lasers and where to get them? This is a bit of wild idea, so I've not been given much of a budget to try it out. I'm good at DIY, but my knowledge of electronics is limited , and my soldering is rubbish...

3 - Any tips on lenses? I'm thinking of using C Mount CCTV lenses. 25mm seems about right.

Many thanks for any help! :yh:

Thanks for replying.

This is about creating a red/blue stereoscopic 3D effect (I'm sorry I can't be more specific) that needs powerful light sources no more than two inches apart. No other light source I know will do it. In a few years maybe LEDs, but not quite yet.

It's not hypothetical. We've done this as a test with low powered lasers and it works. We now need to crank it up.
