do LED's give off coherent light like laser diodes do? what is the average output of a regular radioshack-type LED? also, can light from an LED be focused into a laser?

No, minimal milliwatts, no.

LEDs do not output coherent light. Coherent light has synchronous wavefronts, LEDs emit asynchronous wavefronts. Radio shack LEDs are low power. Look up "Luxeon" LEDs if you want some wattage from your LEDs. Can't focus an LED into a laser, but you can probably focus it to a small and bright spot. Divergence will be a problem for you with "collimation" of a regular LED.

Yes you could focus it to a small spot like a laser but it wont be like a laser, like with a laser you could focus it to infinity but if you focused the led to a point like 1 ft in front of you then it will be enourmosly differnt size even a few ft away. What you would want to do is get one of those 2mil candle power lights from like costco and focus that to a fine point, it will burn like no other altho you would kinda have to carry it in a wheelbarow cause its so huge tho ;D

...lazer... ;D ;D ;D
