808nm 300mw run hot or 500mw not

Hi

I did try to find the answer but did not really come up with anything. Im building a 808nm 300mw laser but had a little accident and blow the diode. I konw what went wrong and I wont be doing it again.
My question is should I build a 300mw laser and run it a full current or build a 500mw but run it at a low current to give me approx 300mw output.
I would like the laser to run for up to 2 / 3 minutes (more if possible) I was going to house in a this Heatsink / Laser Diode Housing for 5.6mm Diodes with Focusing Lens - Detailed item view - OdicForce Lasers Online Shop
What would you recommend? Is the above doable?

Definitely go with 500mW run low, otherwise there is no way you'll reach your goal of 3minute run time without burning it out. Be careful with 300mW+ of NIR!!!! (WEAR GOGGLES)

Yeah I know the dangers of laser's, I have worked in the Telecoms industry for over 15 years. I have spliced fibre on and off for approx 10 years. I can remember using the old microscopes for checking how clean fibre connectors where. Today these are a small camera and viewing screen so you cant burn your eyes.
